Introduction
What is KOREN?
- KOREN(KOrea advanced REsearch Network) is a non-profit testbed network infrastructure established for facilitating research and development and international joint research cooperation.
- It provides quality broadband network testbed for domestic and international research activities to the industry, academia, and research institutions, enabling testing of future network technologies and supporting R&D on advanced applications
- KOREN is an ICT R&D virtuous cycle ecosystem-based infrastructure that efficiently supports the commercialization of network R&D results
- KOREN builds and operates a backbone network that connects 10 major city areas nationwide (Seoul, Suwon, Pangyo, Daejeon, Jeonju, Gwangju, Daegu, Busan, Jeju, Chuncheon) at 10Gbps to 1.26Tbps (However, backbone transmission equipment is accommodated in eight regions except Jeju/Chuncheon PoPs, and Jeju/Chuncheon is currently open to 10G)
- KOREN has been established a interworking point to GEANT/EU by directly linking with the international research network (TEIN) at 100Gbps from the overseas connection point (TEIN Hong Kong, TEIN Singapore) and has been established an interworking point from Hong Kong PoP to Internet2/US via APAN-JP
Why KOREN?
- KOREN enables internetworking and field testing, which cannot be performed over commercial networks
- KOREN enables validation research on high-capacity application services
- KOREN reduces R&D cost for researchers including provision of 1/10/100 Gbps network service without any payment
- KOREN enables international research cooperation through internetworking with international research networks
- KOREN is the only research testbed network that allows high-capacity traffic solely for testing purposes
